What Is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s conversational AI product, built on their GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) series of large language models. It launched in November 2022 and rapidly became the most widely used AI chatbot.
ChatGPT Models
| Model | Released | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-3.5 | 2022 | Fast, cheap, good for simple tasks |
| GPT-4 | 2023 | Stronger reasoning, multimodal |
| GPT-4o | 2024 | Faster GPT-4, native audio |
| o1 / o3 | 2024-25 | Advanced reasoning, chain-of-thought |
Limitations
- Web-only by default: ChatGPT runs in a browser — no native desktop integration
- Single provider: Locked to OpenAI models only
- No local models: Can’t run offline or use open-source models
- Subscription cost: $20/month for Plus, $200/month for Pro
- Privacy concerns: Conversations may be used for training (unless opted out)
ChatGPT Alternatives
Power users who want more flexibility often use AI clients that support multiple providers:
- Use Claude for long-context analysis
- Use GPT-4o for quick general tasks
- Use local models via Ollama for private work
- Switch between models mid-conversation
Beyond ChatGPT with Elvean
Elvean gives you access to ChatGPT’s models (GPT-4o, o1, o3) via your own API key — plus Claude, Gemini, Grok, local models, and more. All in one native Mac app with tools ChatGPT doesn’t offer: MCP servers, interactive charts, maps, and threaded conversations.
Elvean brings all these concepts together in one native Mac app — local models, cloud APIs, agentic tools, and more.
